Unbelievable 1929 Reo Royale Rat Rod

This vehicle was JUST finished the other day by a master craftsman friend of mine. He has some incredible cars in his collection, and I hope to feature some more soon. This vehicle is the new interpretation of a 1929 Reo Royale ...........There are traces of styling that shadow back to that design of that vehicle but..............WOW.

It runs a Buick FireBall engine and its entire drive system is old school in nature, but truly meticulous in build. You have to love the Blatz's tapper off the engine...........Wisconsin beer at its best.

The steering wheel is from a Ford Model 'A' (I believe) vintage speedster...........It swings up and out of the way for exit.

My 1972 Impala Convertible........"The Brady Cruiser"

So........Does everyone remember "The Brady Bunch"? If so, you you remember that Mike on the show always had a rotation of convertibles out at every new season. This car here is the 1972 Impala Convertible with a 400 small block V8. Bobby Brady in an episode of the Brady Bunch but an umbrella through the vinyl roof at the outdoor movie theatre..........The had a 'robin egg' blue Impala on the show.

My mom got this car shown in the pictures as a new car in 1972, and it roughly current day had about 42,000 miles on it. The is by far my favorite car of all that you readers will soon see (more time for the blog!!!). As a child I can remember being a passenger and not being able to see over the dashboard and "Chevrolet" was a word very early in my vocabulary because that is what it said at eye level lap belted onto the vinyl bench seat.

More to come of this car including the restoration if received a few years ago. This is a true classic and the last year ever of the Impala Convertible.

RARE PORSCHE 1959 Porsche 718 RSK Center Seat

Legendary 718 RSK Center Seat, Impeccable Provenance, Much Period Race History

1959 Porsche 718 RSK Center Seat
s/n 718-030
Silver with Beige Interior

Developed from the famous 550 Spyder, the 718 RSK was Porsche`s considerably refined effort to pursue both sports car racing and Formula 2. This end was achieved with a unique ability to configure the car as either left hand drive or center steering, with the conversion possible in just hours. The remainder of the car was a development of the previous cars, with considerable modification to both front and rear suspensions, including the adoption of revised torsion bars bearing a K shape, and thus adding the K of the RSK designation. The frontal area and cowl height were reduced considerably, and the Ernst Fuhrmann`s Type 547 four cam engine developed further. The cars were quite successful, consistently holding their own against the larger Ferraris and Jaguars, and generally dominating their 1500cc class. Victories including Targa Florio and Sebring, further cementing the young company`s reputation (then just ten years old) as building robust and rapid `giant-killers`.

This particular car is one of just six RSK Formula 2 center seat cars. It was originally sold to French driver and privateer (who also drove for Ferrari), Jean Behra.

The car has extensive and well-documented history, which includes the following exploits:
July 6th 1959, Reims Formula II Colin Davis, 9th overall.
July 13th, 1959, Rouen Formula II race Gerard Laureau 9th place finish.
July 26th 1959, Tropees d`Auvergne Sport, race number 26. Jean Behra, 2nd overall.
August 9th, 1959, Karlskoga Kanonloppet, Jean Behra, in entry list only .
May 15, 1960 GP Napoli, Number 112, 2nd overall, 1st in class.
May 29, 1960 GP Spa, Gaetano Starrabba, 10th overall
June, 19th 1960, Circuito di Caserta, Gaetano Starrabba, 2nd overall, 1st in Class.
April 30th, 1961, Targa Florio, Gaetano Starrabba, Gaspare Cavaliere, Number 118, DNS 64th
June 21st 1962, GP Campagnolo, Gaspare Cavaliere, 2nd overall.
May 5th,1963, Targa Florio, Number 188, Gaspare Cavaliere, Vincenzo Riolo, 10th overall.
June 23rd, 1963, Vallelunga, Gaspare Cavaliere, 4th overall

On August 1st 1959, Behra was given a different factory prepared RSK (718-016), borrowed from Prince Gaetano Starrabba for the support race at Avus. Sadly, he lost control in the wet conditions and suffered a fatal accident. After this, Prince Starrabba was given this car (718-030) as compensation for his lost RSK and proceeded to race the car at the Grand Prix de Spa at Fancorchamps, Caserta, and the 1961 Targa Florio (listed as a participant only).

After its racing career, this car was subsequently acquired by Miles Collier, and restored in 1981. It was then displayed in the Collier Automotive museum from 1981 to 1999. Since then, the engine has been rebuilt, and the car was repainted in 2007. The car was then shown at Amelia Island, where it was featured in the Targa Florio circle.

Consequently, the car is in outstanding condition. The paint is excellent and shows almost no wear at all. The panels fit well, and tires are period Dunlop racing items. The small amount of trim, glass, and brightwork is in very good condition, with some cracking to the rubber tail light gaskets, and small areas of crazing to the Plexiglas windscreen.

The interior is in excellent condition. There are few signs of wear anywhere, from the chassis components and floor panels, to the seat, dashboard, instruments, and steering wheel. A cut-off switch has been tastefully installed within reach of the driver when belted in. Naturally, everything is very correct, and there is a high level of detailing and craftsmanship throughout. Particularly interesting is the various attachment points for the seat, shifter, and pedals to allow conversion back of LHD format. A LHD fairing is also included with the car.

The engine compartment is in nice restored condition. It has not been over-restored, and the distinctive fan shroud of the 4-cam engine makes it a very evocative view. Considerable attention has been paid to ensure that the car retains an original feel. The front compartment is similar, and the small sprint or hill climb tank is still in place, as would have been supplied by the coachbuilder, Wendler, rather than having the larger `Le Mans` tank fitted to most RSKs by Porsche. The underside is mostly covered in the interest of aerodynamics, and the suspension components are very nice, likely from the 1981 restoration. With this car also comes with a the left hand drive fairing headrest.

This is an extraordinarily rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding example of this important car. Coming from the heyday of Porsche`s racing, this car enjoys interesting history, impeccable provenance, and outstanding condition. It is eligible for some of the worlds most prestigious events and shows, and is sure to draw a crowd and please both its owner and crowds alike.

So One is Company and Three is a Crowd? My 1988 and 1991 Chevrolet Sprint Turbos

Well, as indicated in my 1987 Chevrolet Sprint Turbo restoration blog these cars can kind of grow on a person. My constant searching of the web led me to these two above.............Could it be an addiction? I just love these cars and want to preserve them as long as possible..........They are the HYBRIDS of their time!!!

The red Sprint Turbo is a 1991 and near mint condition and the white Sprint Turbo is a 1988, near showroom condition.

The 1991 Sprint Turbo as shown above I found on my scouring of http://www.craigslist.com/ , located in the Prince Edward Island classifieds. Emails were exchanged and we agreed to a price, and off went the several day transaction for the wire of funds. Now being in Wisconsin I am not very close to Prince Edward Island http://www.gov.pe.ca/ as anyone could plainly see. I am not sure how many KM's, but it would be a couple thousand miles I am thinking.
The husband and wife that I purchased this from screened me first to see if I was worthy of purchasing the car. I had to be "tested"..............They said there was a line of people around the Island waiting to purchase this car, but as soon as they asked 'how it handled?' in the winter, the couple would then decline the offer. This car has never seen snow, salt, maybe and occasional rain, but otherwise has been babied and stored away since they purchased it new and they only wanted to sell it to somebody who could prove they would take care of it and not butcher it.
Well, I passed!!!! They were so happy that I cherished these cars and it would be going to a good home that they extended the offer to trailer it to Toronto where their family reunion was. So, with a date set I met them at a hotel near the Toronto airport, having flown in myself. We met, did our transaction and the Chevy Sprint Turbo was mine!!!
One more day in Toronto and then fuel the Turbo up for a drive to its new home in Wisconsin!! I drove down from Toronto and through Detroit, hit the "bottom" of Lake Michigan and up through Chicago, then Milwaukee and home............600 and some odd miles and she ran like a champ!!! People were rubbernecking many times to get a look at the car they could 'just not put their finger on'.
Since owning it I have done a few maintenance's, various wheels and tires to find the "right" ones, and then just an oil change of Synthetic every season before storage. This is truly a rare car.
My white 1988 Chevrolet Sprint Turbo came from California; one owner and had never been out of the same town of Lancaster. I found this for sale on a classified system call the California Recyclers. The old timer who had it just had not been using it. Another car that has most records and is all there. Rare functioning A/C and an even rarer typical color stripe interior but with dark charcoal carpet and trim. I am thinking this might have been one of the last 1988 Sprint Turbos' of the boat in 1988. I have never come across the factory combo of this. If you go back to my 1987 Sprint restoration blog, you will see the ever common color stripe with light grey. Very strange..............

Here is a set of black hubcaps I tried out and then soon shelved when a set of alloys came available for it. That is my 2007 Acura TSX in the rear............I love this car!! It is my near BMW or Lexus!!!

1926 Studebaker Bix Six ...........My father's early 1970's barn find

This car my father found well before I was born..........The lore is that he traded a fire truck chassis for this 1926 Studebaker...........I believe it is called the EP Big Six Brougham. I guess that the chickens were all over it ..............As I find the pictures again I will post them. The roof was gone (which is now some fabric roofing material of some kind). The engine was in pieces but all there.........SOLID car, and built literally like at tank.

As it stands today the car is very complete, and my father has done minimal restorations on it (such as the wood wheels with new wide white walls and the various chrome items). Otherwise, it is painted in flat black.

This would be a gorgeous car restored someday...........It runs like a Swiss watch right now, and is kind of fun to navigate as is. What a conversation piece...............I have only ever come across a couple others similar.

This runs an in line six cylinder engine that is enormous, and has lots of low end torque. I have heard the old timers say that they can remember using these for just the running chassis to run various farm equipment.............I could not even imagine what this weighs.

More to come on this as I sift through various picture boxes from over the years......I know those pictures are somewhere of it being dragged out of the barn it was "found in".

The 1987 Sprint Turbo and what fueled the "Fueled Paradigm"

Hello Everyone!!! The Blog is Official!!!

I am trying to think of how to kick this Blog off............."Fueled Paradigm". Soooooo many things going through my head at this point, with all I want to cover, which photo scanner I should buy as I piece together!!?? All these thoughts, memories, perspectives and ramblings. I have been known to weave a good story verbally, and usually with some very off-color humor...........So why not give the inner blogger in me a chance?

My new friend KiKi over at http://www.ablithepalate.com/ was the one that encouraged me to take this leap of faith into the cyber world. She lives and breathes social media, and professionally we had started to go down a road in the business world with our respective careers. Over many lengthily discussions we got onto the subject of her food passion and how her blog has allowed her to share something she loves and engage with others with the same interests...........

The gears starting turning!!

I put the "wheels" in motion and thought to myself about the passion I have for automobiles and transportation in general and how that could translate to the cyber world. People are always asking me for car advice. In a previous career capacity, I worked for the Midwest's largest dealership group in the Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Scion manufacturers "Import Super Store"..............This was years ago and even today people are asking me competitive comparisons across the different models, brands, and usually how to navigate the "lease vs. buy" continuum of questions. Many times I thought about going into business as a "vehicle inspection service" for people that were unsure of the used vehicle they were buying, or even where the numbers should fall on a transaction..............Even today I get constant calls. My career is significantly different now..........Still in the sales world, but now for a well respected advertising agency..........
You can take the garage out of the boy, but not the boy...............You know.

So, here I am!! Going to share with all my journey, opinions, and soul deep passion for most things with an engine. I have decided to start sharing with you my most recent project:

The 1987 Chevrolet Sprint Turbo

The love affair with this car started somewhere around the time I was 14. My cousin Samantha had gotten one new as an early high school graduation present and when I saw it for the first time (as a car that was a few days "new") its red paint and pint size body made you want to look at it. The bright white decals saying "Turbo Sprint" jumped off the side of the car to let you know that this was no measly attempt.

Even as a teen I could see that the car was very unique in that it ran an inter cooled turbocharged 1.0 liter Suzuki engineered 3 cylinder power plant which made the Turbo Sprint the smallest and most fuel-efficient model in the Chevy lineup and yet, one of the quickest at a 0-60 time of 10.5 seconds.

Unfortunately, as with many of these cars that suffered the same fate, my cousin and her subsequent siblings to her (and many friends along the way) managed to run the car in the ground with little maintenance and rare cleaning. I can remember one time helping them change the oil in it and we had to clean the sludge out of the oil cap passage so we could dump the new oil in..............The change intervals were probably every 15,000 or so, if lucky. As the story went the car was traded in for a camper of sorts when the kids were done with it. After that one left my immediate viewing, it was many years till I saw another. These cars are rare, and the handful that survived is most likely very few.

So, now that I am older and have some "play" money at times, I had a mission to find one of these cars and bring it back to Wisconsin. My only criteria was that it had to be a ZERO rust car, and very mint condition would have been nice, but I was open to one that needed restoration.
The hunt was on..................I feared finding a car like this:

With much diligence, I was able to locate one in the greater Los Angeles area. The Craig's List classified said that the car was complete, 100% solid, and in need of a full restoration. Oh yeah, and it did not run at all either. Many extra parts to go with it. Sounded interesting!!! We started corresponding regarding the car, and the pictures that came were from a camera phone and very low quality at best. I could see however that yes, it was complete, filthy, "beach rat faded" red in color, and somewhat looking to be abandoned in a way..............a lonely way. Anyway, the gentleman indicated that it was headed to the crusher in a week if he was unable to sell it because he was loosing his space (in the ghetto I think). Anyway, $350.00 he said, with a NOS turbo head, new clutch in the box, as well as boxed brakes, extra engine items from a parts car, and the assurance that he would secure the car once the cash was received and prepare it for shipping.

I got the cash rounded up and overnighted it to him, and then got my tried and true car shipping guru Goldie at http://www.reliable-carriers.com/ to make arrangement to pick up the car in L.A..........She is the best and true knowledge base of how to get it done. I have brokered MANY cars in the past, and she handles most of my cross country (usually enclosed due to vehicle $$).

I thought to myself about the prize that awaited me and how I looked forward to having a project to dive into once it arrived. My workshop has a hoist in it, so with my mechanical aptitude, tools, and sheer will I was determined to get it back up and running, restored and road bound!!! I can do most but paint and body work..............That I leave to my neighbor and body man Dan, down the road. He does great work and is very fair. He also knows I am picky.

Two days later the 1987 Chevy Sprint Turbo arrives:

Rough it is............He did not lie!! But, it is solid!! ZERO rust and the CarFax reads that is has never been out of California, and was last on the road in 2004. My work was cut out for me!! But, good "bones" I guess you could say. The vehicle had all the evidence of being thoroughly cooked over many years. I was glad to see that the A/C system had not been tampered with and this car had the RARE cruise control.

Within an hour or so of its arrival the bigger question stood of "Why does it not run"? The man I bought it from said he was not mechanically inclined and that the engine had oil in the pan (which was true)MMMMMM. Well, I hooked up the battery in the car and all the lights go on, so it has power, and the horn works too. Therefore it should at least turn over right? NOOOOO.........It makes this horrible straining sound as if it was actually dimming the lights in the neighborhood trying to get it to at least turn over...........Nothing. Plenty of juice, and the starter sounds like it is engaged, but nothing!!

So, up on the hoist it goes for the underneath inspection and very quickly I realize that the piston is blow out the front of the motor next to the oil filter. That's why...........If not looking at the right angle, it is blocked by the Turbo and subsequent exhaust elements. The engine is tiny to say the least too. So, now the true assessment happens as to what direction to go..............I have an NOS head and all I need is a good lower end.

Being in Wisconsin, many older established salvage yards hang onto older merchandise......Maybe it is our conservative nature of the Midwest to hang onto things because you "just never know when you might need something". So, with this in mind, the search was on for something local in the salvage yard in the Turbo Sprint form. Low and behold, this old timer had one in his yard that "arrived running many, many years ago, but had the tranny out of it." I had to go and see for myself. The yard was about 30 minutes away and once there realized that this Turbo Sprint that was almost rusted in half, still had a good engine in it. I bought the car right there and had it craned onto a flat bed that afternoon and delivered to my workshop before dinner.

The Junker:

Okay, so it seems like I have all the ingredients..............With the help of an aggravating fight a day or two later with my father, I had the engine out of the donor car pretty quickly (a focus helps to turn the temperature down on boiling blood). Things are easy to remove when you are cutting the car apart!!! Once the engine was out I removed the head and saw that the lower end was in great condition, and actually was the product of a car that appeared to have routine maintenance

The "Turbo Sprint only" block (due to the detonation sensor, different pistons, and turbo oil outlet) I took to Tim at my local machine shop for a good boiling, boring, the installation of Suzuki Vitara pistons (very close to Turbo which are no longer available), along with seals, bearings, etc. Tim then used the NOS head provided, assembled it all, and then finished off the timing belt, gaskets, etc.

One step closer to the road!!

Next was to get the old engine out of the car, which was nothing short of a mess with grease, oil, and grime. GUNK is such a great thing!!! Do some soaking with it and bring out the pressure gun..........This stuff is great!!

Once the engine was staring at me on the workshop floor, and the transmission was separated, I thought it would be nice to see what I could find for a low mileage transmission for the car. Considering that is was high mileage, has some rattly sound in it with the car rolled, and was pissing grease out of the seals................I yet again went for the needle in the haystack search because it is a Turbo spec trans. There is a resource out there for a nation wide salvage vehicle search called http://www.car-part.com/ , and I was able to find a Chevy Sprint Turbo entire power train assembly (engine and trans)(500 miles only!!!), that was removed from a car in 1988 that was rear ended and salvaged out at that time. The guy said I was the first person to call on it in 20 years, and that he was tired of looking at it. He had 500 mile front hubs, radiator, engine and trans, along with the ECU. The rest of the car was long gone..........I bought the stuff CHEAP and had the items boxed and shipped to me. The great thing is that this car got the 500 mile trans installed on this project, but even better now I have a 500 mile engine as a spare.

Above: The final Assembly of the new power train.

With the addition of some MOBIL ONE Full Synthetic motor oil, a newly found and purchased NOS Turbo, NOS distributor, and a wing and a prayer, I turned the key to see if it would turn over...........It FIRED!!! On the first attempt it started and purred as if I just pulled of the HWY. In the shadows of the night I took it down the country road that surround me and it never missed a beat (mind you without a muffler). I thought I better not push my luck since it was not licensed, no tail lights.............need I say more.

After a few weeks of tweaking the drive train, I took roughly 2 weeks to refurbish the interior with new dye for plastics, seat steam cleanings at the local car porter, the addition of a Canadian 1990 Turbo Sprint MK2 steering wheel, and some great quality carpet.

The rehabbed interior:

Next it was time to comb the pig's hair, and get a new paint job!! Dan from the body shop worked on this over our harsh winter we had for the 2007-2008 season. The car was completely stripped, windows removed, trim, fenders, hood, etc.

The Paint Process:

The Result:

I had installed some larger wheels and soon realized they were a bit too big with the rears rubbing a little. So, the originals where cleaned, new tires and then the Sprint Turbo factory white colored wheel covers were resprayed. I also found a guy online still making the original NOS style decals that caught my eye back in 1987 as a kid. I have a list of people that want to buy it from me right now, and the car I can see has gone up in value some degree due to the fuel crunch!!!!!!

So........The Unveiling:

Did I mention that I think I opened a can of worms? Well I happened to come across a few more Chevy Sprint Turbo's, and well.............lets say I have a few more things to blog about as well as many more things NON Sprint. We all have to have a niche right?

Hopefully I will get this blog up and running and make it a fun place for many to visit.
